Behind the picturesque façade of a typical terraced house in Bruges lies an oasis of modern design. The interior of this home, designed by architect Frederic Kielemoes, combines clean simplicity with luxurious materials and a meticulous finish. That same sensibility is reflected in the premium, bespoke patio cover designed by Umbris for this urban garden.
Seeking to create greater comfort and a sense of seclusion, the residents chose to equip their sunny urban garden with a flexible patio cover. They wanted a solution that could be closed when shade and shelter were needed, or left open to enjoy an abundance of natural light. However, the L-shaped garden with walls set at an angle precluded the installation of a modular louvred roof or ready-made awning. This project demanded custom work down to the smallest details: a challenge that the design team at Umbris was only too happy to take on.
Since everything at Umbris is custom designed and built in-house at the company’s studio in Lokeren, the team was able to follow the precise contours of the trapezium-shaped outdoor living area. But when the residents asked for part of the cover to extend over the swimming pool to create a shaded zone there as well, Umbris went beyond the original concept to deliver a more expansive solution. Two extended girders were used to create a single, clean sightline running the length of the garden. The open along the angled wall of the outdoor living area adds to the dynamic, designer aesthetic of the louvred roof and enhances the sense of space. Traditional support posts were deliberately avoided, giving the impression that the patio cover floats effortlessly between the house and the rear wall.

This ingenious sun-shading fabric system can be slid open and closed – partially or fully – depending on the amount of shade you want for your ideal outdoor experience.
